FOR DISCUSSION: Future of MMORPG

Changes happen very fast. And in technology, what was considered as dream yesterday will become real eventually. The capability of MMORPG to present a virtual world over the internet will be the most important aspect that may change our civilization.

  • People will live behind their avatars

As more people play MMORPG, each and every person will have virtual-world twin, and create different identity in the virtual world created by the game. People that we see on the game could be totally different with what they are in the reality, since players are given capabilities to build their own avatars.

  • More people are going to play for their living

Almost everything in MMORPG can be used to create business in real world. Items, weapons, equipments, and currency in the games are exchanged among players. In fact, there are people who are willing to pay real money on these virtual stuffs. Even in this present day we can find people are selling World of Warcraft’s (one of renowned MMORPG) accounts, characters, and gold for dollars. We might question why these people are willing to spend money for these virtual items. Actually, it requires a lot of efforts to obtain these items in the games. Hence, we can see this case in such a way that players sell their effort, just like in the real world.

  • MMORPG will no longer be considered as a game

With those points described above, we can consider that MMORPG has become more than just a game. It is another life for some people where they can meet with friends from different sides of countries, and interact with each other. It is another form of job where people can earn money by playing MMORPG. Furthermore, MMORPG could be extended to create a virtual world for global use. This will connect people around the world easily. They can communicate through chat rooms and IP telephony.

  1. Dear friends,
I agreed with the points that you guys given. I am going to share my opinion to you guys by using your points! For the point of people will live behind their avatar, in MMORPGs, avatars are character created by the players as the ‘person’ they will be in the game. As these avatars may be highly customized, players are able to pick an outlook anyway they like, they are feel to personates as Male or female character in the game as well, as well the fact of their real age, are usually hidden for other players in the game. This may have indeed created people who would abuse those in game looks, and there are definitely people who decide to act negatively in the game. But it had also given the spaces for those with difficulties to communicate with other players to enhance their social ability in the game as in MMORPGs, player able to communicate with people from all around the world.

Besides, more people are going to play for their living as you guys said. There are players, whom after spending a lot of effort and time in a game upgrading their avatar, will eventually quits the game. These people may usually sells their avatars for a value with are quite profitable for something as mere as just digital pixels and data, however, for others who enjoy playing MMORPGs, these bought accounts will eases their time and effort in player the game. As like any other hobbies where people tend to spend effort and finance in, MMORPGs would have been the same.

Lastly, MMORPG will no longer be considered as a game. These days, various complain and debates had surfaces from the many MMORPGs in the market. These games had affected people around the world both positively and negatively, other than boosting a huge market that seems never to be quenched from the various amount of MMORPGs already in the market.

  2. From my view i think that its true people playing mmorpg can actually earn money in the game. I have seen people selling the item in game with exchange of reload credit for the young teenager which doesn't have knowledge about e-banking which are more complicated to use.etc item A cost around RM30 based on the two players agreement inside the game chatting. The person will send the reload coupon of RM30 as a form of buying the item in the game with others player. This kind of selling mostly need alot of trust as its unsafe. Once the other player get the reload coupon code he might not send the item to the player according to their personal agreement. This type of transaction can only be done if both player have actually play the mmorpg game for quite sometimes and are well known of each other in game. Its true that the player can also meet and interact with different people around the world but the problem i encounter is the communication problems and time zone different. What i mean is that not all people inside the mmorpg game know English. Some of them uses french, dutch, chinese and other languages. So in order to really interact with others we need to find people who know English or the language we known in the game and it require some hard time. Also i found that friends i add in mmorpg game from different country might not be online during the time i was playing. etc i play the game at night time, it would be daytime in his country where he has to work. So its actually hard for me to really interact with people around the world. Normally i will get a bunch of friends and introduce them the game, once they are interested we will start playing together. We will actually spend time together to team up or party in the game to do quest or farming.

  3. Dear Chia Yin and Alvin,

First of all thanks for your reply to our blog.

Chia Yin, you mentioned that gamers are allowed to choose any character or look they'll like other people to see and it is true. For a male, he can create a female avatar in the games to communicate with each other, and vice versa. Because of the freedom to choose avatar, people really abused it and make it for wrong purpose. For example, quite sometime ago I read a newspaper news about the MMORPG. There was a guy from China pretending to be a girl using the online avatar to cheat virtual goods and currency from guys and resell it to other gamers. He sent fake beautiful girl's photos to guys and make guys fall in love with "HER", so guys are willing to spend high amount of money to win "her" heart. That guy was making lots of money by doing so and finally his real identify was revealed by someone. From there, we can see how some people abused the avatars.

Alvin, yes I agree with you. Online transactions involving P2P are unsafe and has high potential of fraud if they do not know each other well. Those transactions are even unsafe if it is international transaction. So far there is no law could be used to against those fraud. Hopefully in the future the gaming companies or some international authority will able to find some solution for the problems to avoid the increasing number of cyber-crime.

  4. In the same article you found, this graph show rapid speed of increase for MMORPG players worldwide. This graph is showing the statistic up to year 2005. What if 2010? The amount of players is going to be huge.

Since MMORPG is virtual reality, the future will never end because there could be anything that is coming out due to no cost. I start to agree on what you are saying and this can be serious because people tend to live in virtual world when they cannot achieve on their reality goals. One of your points is MMORPG will no longer be considered as a game. I think this is going to be serious if they want to be real in the future.

I would like to ask about the effects for this MMORPG. What I search is the effects are greater decreased levels of health, well-being, sleep, real life socialization and academic stuff. So, I do think that the future might not be good because this will influence health.

I will try to comment on your discussion again because I am very interested in searching information about this knowledge. Thank you for sharing.

  6. Hi Jeffrey, great to having discussion here….sorry late to response your comment
Anyway, regarding on our point of view about future of MMORPG is no longer being considered as a game. Based on what we found that, MMORPG bring a massive multiplayer is not only to enjoy this game but also enable the player to make socialize in virtual world. Thinking about the future of this MMORPG has a good and bad side. I agree that you have mentioned above said that the effects of MMORPG might be decreased levels of health. Since the one who has been addicted by the game will never stop to playing it. They will always want their character in the game to become the best. To become the best character who masters in all of the skills, the gamers have to kill the monsters in the game as much as possible in order to increase their level. This requires the gamers to have a substantial amount of time on the game which will make them to continue playing without having a rest. They even skip their meals just because they are really focusing on their game. This behavior will cause the gamers unhealthy. From a research that has been done by Nicholas Yee (Yee, Nicholas, 2002, Ariadne - Understanding MMORPG Addiction), it shows that almost 50% gamers from different range of ages often lose their sleep because of their playing habits.
Besides that, I also found that another negative effects of MMORPG such as lost of interest activities, deteriorating academic work due to excessive play especially for student, etc. In contrast take a look positive effect on MMORPG may help unemployment people to earn money as I know China is one of the famous gold farmers on the games. According to the data population, china is a number one who has a big citizen over the world. In this situation the unemployment increases because people cannot find a job due a number of fields of work doesn’t balance with a number of people grown. So, many people in China decided as a gold farmer as a preference to earn money but I do think that is not a good choice to be considered as a job to make their living a good. In conclusion I think MMORPG cannot be consider as a game, they are many directions to play MMORPG not only to get entertainment from it but also can be consider people are going to play for they are living and live behind their avatars. I do think same like you that future might be not good for people but I do not know whether any people think that playing MMORPG is a way to make their living continuing from there they can earn money. Actually it depends on each person situation to say that will be not good or good, consider what advantages and disadvantages that offer to them. But through my imagination, MMORPG would be a good platfrom in the future to gain more people and change the culture of people living in real world. We do not know what will happened but at least we have perception how this will be happened to future. What do you think??

Thanks to make discussion in our blog....we are really appreciate your comment and sharing with us.
